Stay: Zebra Kalahari Lodge

Rocky Atlantic coastline near Lüderitz with waves breaking on boulders and a vast blue sky

04Stop

Sossusvlei, 2 nights

Big Daddy, Dead Vlei, Dune 45, Sesriem Canyon.

The Essence

Why This Route

This is the route that earns "Open. Silent. Desert. Ancient." in full. The Kalahari's near-total emptiness. Kolmanskop's particular kind of silence, a town the desert simply took back. The Namib, still the oldest desert on Earth, however many times you cross it. And the San, whose culture in the Kalahari predates almost everything else on this list. Fifteen days is what it takes to actually feel all four at once, not just read about them.

A wide view across Fish River Canyon under a bright cloud-streaked sky
A red and white lighthouse above the rocky tidal shoreline near Lüderitz on the Atlantic coast
A traveller walking the knife-edge ridge of a tall Sossusvlei dune in low sun
A silver 4x4 crossing a flat gravel desert plain with dunes on the horizon
A pod of dolphins swimming through clear blue Atlantic water off Walvis Bay
A quiver tree on a rocky Damaraland hillside overlooking a valley at sunset
A candlelit table set with wine glasses at a desert lodge at dusk
Two desert-adapted elephants walking a sandy riverbed lined with green bush
View from a thatched lodge deck across a still waterhole to green grassland and a big cloud-filled sky
Safari chairs around a lit fire pit on gravel in front of a thatched lodge at dusk

Our 15-day journey through Namibia was magical, and a significant part of that was thanks to our guide, Jurgens. His enthusiasm for the country was infectious, and he shared not only its stunning landscapes but also its rich culture and history. He genuinely cared about our preferences and adapted our itinerary so we got the most out of every location. Even after 15 days together, we never grew tired of his company.

As a solo female traveller very far from home, it was wonderful to be with a knowledgeable guide that I trusted. He knows so much about his country and about being in the various landscapes — I always felt safe travelling with him. Being with Jurgens allowed me to see so much more of the country than I ever could have on my own. I couldn't have asked for a better guide!

We did a 10-day trip across Namibia with Jurgens and it was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives. I captured some dream photographs, all thanks to his expertise and immense knowledge of Namibia. He made sure we were always in the right place at the right time and showed us magical places we would never have come across self-driving.
